How to use the trucker map

Search a town, city or ZIP code, or use your location, and the map shows every truck stop, rest area, truck parking lot, weigh station and certified scale within the distance you pick. Tap a pin or a row for the details we have: truck spaces at public rest areas, whether a stop is open around the clock, and the diesel price for its region. Rest areas and their truck space counts come from the Federal Highway Administration's national survey. Truck stops, parking, scales and weigh stations come from OpenStreetMap, which is thorough along the interstates and thinner on back roads, so call ahead before you count on a spot you have not used before.

Trucker Map Questions

Where the data comes from, and what it can and cannot tell you.

Where do the diesel prices come from?

The U.S. Energy Information Administration's weekly on-highway diesel survey, which reports an average for eight regions of the country, like the Gulf Coast, the Midwest and California. Every stop in a region shows that region's average, labelled as such, so use it to see where fuel is cheaper along your route rather than as the price on a particular pump.

Why does a stop show a regional price instead of its own?

Station-level diesel prices are sold by a handful of data companies, and we have not licensed one yet. Rather than guess, the map shows the official regional average and says so. Regional prices still tell you something useful, because the gap between the Gulf Coast and California is often well over a dollar a gallon.

How current is the truck parking information?

Truck space counts at public rest areas come from the Federal Highway Administration's Jason's Law survey. Truck stops, private truck parking and scales come from OpenStreetMap, which volunteers keep up to date. Neither shows live availability, so treat a space count as capacity rather than a promise that a spot is open tonight.

Does the map show whether a weigh station is open?

No. It shows where weigh stations and ports of entry are, not whether they are open right now, and it is the thinnest layer on the map because many stations are not labelled in OpenStreetMap yet. For locations and open or closed status use your state's 511 service or a bypass app like Drivewyze or PrePass.

What is a CAT scale?

A certified public truck scale, usually at a truck stop, where you can weigh your rig for a small fee before you reach a weigh station. CAT guarantees its weights, which is why drivers use it to check axle weights after loading. The axle weight calculator on this site helps you work out where to slide the tandems.

Is the trucker map free?

Yes, with no account and no signup. The calculators on this site do their maths in your browser. The map looks up the place you search on our server to find what is nearby, and it keeps no record of what you searched for. The server does count requests against a one-way hash of your network address, so that nobody can hammer a free service.
