How to use the fuel stop planner

Pick where you are starting and where you are going, then enter your usable tank size, your average MPG, the fuel you have on board and the reserve you never want to go below. The planner routes the trip, finds every truck stop within two miles of the route, and works out the cheapest set of stops that gets you there without dipping into the reserve: it fills up where diesel is cheap and buys only what it needs where diesel is dear. Prices are the U.S. Energy Information Administration's weekly averages for each region, so the plan is best at the big decisions, like filling up before you cross into California or the West Coast, rather than choosing between two stops at the same exit.

Fuel Stop Planner Questions

How it picks your stops, and what the prices mean.

How does the planner decide where to stop?

It looks ahead as far as a full tank reaches. If diesel is cheaper somewhere in that stretch, it buys just enough to get there with your reserve left. If nothing ahead is cheaper, it fills up where you are. That rule gives the lowest fuel bill for the prices it has, and among equal prices it picks the stop further on so you stop less often.

Where do the prices come from?

The U.S. Energy Information Administration's weekly on-highway diesel survey, which publishes an average for eight regions of the country. Every stop in a region gets that region's average. The planner shows the regions your route crosses and their prices, so you can see why it chose where it did.

What should I use for my reserve?

Enough to cover a closed stop, a detour or a long wait at a shipper. Many drivers keep a quarter of a tank. The planner never plans below the number you give it, and it counts the fuel to drive off the highway to each stop and back.

Why did it tell me to buy only part of a tank?

Because diesel is cheaper further along. Filling up in full at the dearer stop would mean carrying expensive fuel past a cheaper one. The planner buys just enough to reach the cheaper stop with your reserve intact.

Is the fuel stop planner free?

Yes, with no account and no signup. It sends your start, destination and the numbers you enter to our server to plan the trip, and it stores nothing about you.

Is it in the TraxQ driver app?

Yes. Drivers on TraxQ get the same planner in the Route tab of the driver app, using the route to their next stop.
